My name is Malwina Wójcik and I am an icon painter. I use one of the older traditional painter's techniques called "Egg Distemper" which is used today mostly in icon workshops. I became interested in icons during my studies at Malopolski UniversityFolk in Wzdów, Poland (near Sanok). There I learned many artistic handicrafts which include: weaving fabrics, embroidery, laces,osiers, ceramics etc. I learned thesis of painting from Andrzej Kijowski and lace from Maria Suwala. I also specialized in the area of artistic fabric under the direction of Barbara Florek. After final examinations I became an instructor of artistic handicrafts. While in school I found studio of icons in Cisna,where I started to discover beauty of icons. I got to know their symbolic meanings, history and techniques of painting icons. I studied at studio for about 2 years. These days I live in Brelików (near Ustrzyki Dolne). My icons and paintings can be seen at the Bieszczady galleries in Brelików. | |||||||

Also, I would like to give a short explaination of how I create my pictures. First I must to glue and ground boards. Next I start drawing some type of icon. On the areas in which gold-plating is intended, I put avery thin layer of resin and lay delicate flakes imitation of gold (or gold, silver) leaf plating. The techniques that I use in painting egg distemper consist of mixing pigments (powdered dry stuff of natural origin) with hen's egg yolk. This process permits me to get the fresh brightness of colors and theirdurability. I first paint hidden layers of suitable colors for complexion, clothing and scenery. Then I paint transparent layers ofdifferent colors. It takes creating many such layers to obtain the most desirable effects. I finish up with the details ie: golden ornamentson vestments and any inscriptions on the icon. After finishing, I protect the whole painting with varnish. All this work will demand verymuch patience, precision and quite a lot practice. Utilizing all of these techniques is how I achieve these beautiful effects! |
